Watoto Tucode Mashinani

Watoto Tucode Mashinani is a program that brings together Kids aged 6 to 14 from rural Kenya to learn about Computer Science through a Kids Coding Week. The program happens during the school holidays and has seen 103 children benefit from the program since its inception.

Most of these children, before joining the program are not exposed to computers, with most being so curious to see what a computer or a laptop looks like. We first introduce them to Scratch Programming Language, and with their curiosity, they grasp so much within the week of the holiday. It is always exciting to see the creativity that is realised by these kids, as within a week, they often create music while competing on who’s making better rhythms. The also get to challenge each other by telling stories through codes. Upon completion of this basic language, they get introduced to advanced languages such as Java and Python.

To prepare for humanity for the next 100 years, we need more of our children to learn computer programming skills, regardless of their future profession. Along with reading and writing, the ability to program is going to define what an educated person is.
